This weekend was all about “Dune: Part Two,” and not much else. And, for good reason. The sequel to the 2021 film, based on Frank Herbert’s sci-fi novel, brought in $81 million between Thursday and Sunday. That’s slightly higher than what I predicted last week ($80 million).
Warner CEO David Zaslav must be ecstatic as “Dune: Part Two” will most likely have some major legs these next few weeks at the box-office. It racked up an A on CinemaScore, 9/10 on IMDb and 95% audience score on RT. It’s also a blockbuster that sets the stage for a third and final film, “Dune: Messiah,” which, rumors keep persisting, has been greenlit for 2027.
Nothing came close to touching “Dune: Part Two” over the weekend. Its closest competitor was “Bob Marley One Love” ($7.4M) which has turned into a decent hit for Paramount having, so far, made $82 million domestically. Also, finishing at #10 was Ethan Coen’s “Drive Away Dolls” which has turned into a total disaster, having only made $4 million in the U.S.
