Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has given us an update on the status of the next installment of the “Pirates of The Caribbean” franchise (via ComicBook.com).
Bruckheimer is not revealing too much but did confirm that they aim to reboot the franchise with the upcoming sixth movie. “We’re gonna reboot Pirates, so that is easier to put together because you don’t have to wait for certain actors,” he said.
Do we need this reboot? of course not. We’re not even sure if Johnny Depp would be back as the iconic Captain Jack Sparrow. He was the best, and, at times, only, reason to watch the previous films.
In Decembr 2022, Bruckheimer had told AP Entertainment that he was “working on” a potential Johnny Depp return to the franchise and a screenplay was being written for it. Bruckheimer went on to mention that he had Margot Robbie in mind as the lead.
Last month, Daniel Richtman reported that the head honchos over at Disney were interested in having Depp back as the rum-guzzling Sparrow, but only in a supporting role, maybe even just a cameo.
Craig Mazin, show creator of “Chernobyl” and “The Last Of Us”, did confirm that he was co-writing the screenplay with original ‘Pirates’ scribe, Ted Elliot. Here’s Mazin explaining the process of pitching his idea to Disney:
We pitched it and thought there’s no way they’re buying it, it’s too weird. And they did! And then he wrote a fantastic script and the strike happened and everyone’s waiting around.
The "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise has been dead to many fans, especially after the last release, 2017's "Dead Men Tell No Tales.” However, money talks, and reboots being greenlit occur on a near-weekly basis in the industry. The only way this one doesn’t sink is if Depp make his return to the franchise, otherwise this might be as successful a reboot as Disney might be led to believe.
