Here the first trailer for the Viggo Mortensen- directed “The Dead Don’t Hurt.”
Following the well-reviewed “Falling,” Mortensen’s latest attempt at directing premiered at TIFF last September, to positive notices — 85% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Set in the 1860s, the film is a Western about a French Canadian, Vivienne Le Coudy (Krieps), who embarks on a relationship with Danish immigrant Holger Olsen (Mortensen) and the dangers that follow them. The film stars Vicky Krieps (“Phantom Thread”) alongside Mortensen in the leads, with Solly McLeod, Garret Dillahunt, Colin Morgan, Ray McKinnon, Luke Reilly, Atlas Green, and Danny Huston in supporting roles.
Shout Studios! will release “The Dead Don’t Hurt” on May 31 and open it in theaters nationwide. These are ambitious release plans from the indie studio, but they’re clearly trying to take advantage of a strike-ridden 2024 schedule. Maybe a few indies will break out this year because of that, who knows.
