Leigh Whannell's ‘Wolf Man' Starts Production

March 18, 2024 Jordan Ruimy

Leigh Whannell is back in the director’s chair for Universal’s upcoming “Wolf Man.” The film has started production and is eyeing an October 25, 2024 release.

If you remember, last year, Ryan Gosling had dropped out and been replaced by Christopher Abbott on the creature feature. Plot details are still being kept in the dark side, but the mysterious story is said to be focused on a man whose family is being terrorized by the titular predator.

In 2020, Whannell‘s “The Invisible Man” introduced a possible winning formula for the rest of Universal’s “Monsterverse.” I really enjoyed what Whannell did with the source material, he turned the story into a Cronenberg-ian nightmare. Whannell’s other credits include the ultra-underrated low-budget sci-fi “Upgrade.”

In early 2020, Whannell was announced as the director of “Wolf Man,” but he was soon replaced by director Derek Cianfrance. Well, now he’s officially back and Abbott being part of the cast, replacing Gosling, is not necessarily a downgrade in my books. Abbott was actually supposed to star in Ari Aster’s “Eddington,” also currently filming, but ended up choosing “Wolfman” instead.
