The last time Werner Herzog and Nicolas Cage made a film together was 2009’s “Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans” — a completely twisted take on Abel Ferrara’s equally deranged 1992 film. Ever since then, I’ve encountered Herzog twice, and both times mentioned to him that he should make another one with Cage.
Well, today’s my lucky day. Daniel Richtman is reporting that Cage is set to star in Herzog's next film, “Dead Man's Wire.” After seeing Richtman’s report, I dug up some more info on the film — it is set to shoot later this year, in Kentucky, and was written by Austin Kolodney.
In the film, set in 1977 and based on a true story, Cage plays Tony Kiritsis, a former real estate developer who put a dead man's switch on himself and the mortgage banker who did him wrong, demanding $5 million and a personal apology.
Herzog, 81, is the German filmmaker known for his collaborations with, fellow madman, Klaus Kinski, their notable efforts include “Aguirre: Wrath of God,” “Fitzcarraldo,” and “Nosferatu.” Herzog is also a prominent figure in non-fiction filmmaking, he’s made some great documentaries these last four decades, including his seminal 2006 film “Grizzly Man.”
