Although not official, it’s pretty obvious that Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Kinds of Kindness” will be going to the Cannes Film Festival. Searchlight has just announced a June 21, 2024 release date for the film.
Speaking to The Guardian, Yorgos Lanthimos teased that his new film, which once again stars Emma Stone, was an anthology composed of three separate stories:
“It’s all shot and we have started editing,” says Lanthimos. “It’s a contemporary film, set in the US – three different stories, with four or five actors who play one part in each story, so they all play three different parts. It was almost like making three films, really.”
So, in a way, we’re getting three new Lanthimos films at Cannes, and I’m sure, as it comes with the territory, we’ll be debating which of the three is the strongest, weakest etc.
The Greek filmmaker is actually coming off a highly successful Venice Film Festival, where he won the Golden Lion last year for “Poor Things”. There was intrigue as to whether “Kinds of Kindness” would bring Lanthimos back to the Lido this coming September, but, alas, Searchlight has clearly decided on Cannes.
The cast of ‘Kindness’ includes Stone, Margaret Qualley, Willem Dafoe, Joe Alwyn, Jesse Plemons, Hong Chau, and Hunter Schafer. The film was shot while Lanthimos’ “Poor Things” was in the final stages of VFX adjustments. Post-production took so long on the film that Lanthimos decided to just shoot another one.
Lanthimos’ filmography includes “Dogtooth,” “The Favourite,” and “The Lobster.” He and Stone will be shooting their next film, a remake of Korean hit “Save the Green Planet!,” right after Cannes, in mid-summer.
