Recently, it was revealed that Chris Rock will direct the American remake of Thomas Vinterberg's Oscar-winning “Another Round.”
Stuart Bloomberg wrote the first draft of the remake and another writer has been hired to work with Rock. Honestly, what is there to say? At this point, Hollywood is so allergic to original content that even their non-IP content has to be based on a previous film.
Vinterberg — who also directed 1998’s excellent “Festen” — was recently asked about Rock’s take on his film and he’s surprisingly excited by the prospect of seeing “Another Round” get remade on the big screen
The choice of Chris Rock is exciting. It's exciting what he comes up with. I am full of good expectations.
Vinterberg did mention that he is not actively involved with the American remake, but did have a warning for Rock.
If it’s shit, he’ll get slapped again.
The rights to ”Another Round” had been sold to Leonardo DiCaprio's production company, Appian Way, in 2021 following the film's success at the Oscars, where it won Best International Film. Obviously, this led to speculation that DiCaprio could play the lead role. No casting decisions have been made just yet.
Vinterberg’s “Another Round” starred Mads Mikkelsen, Thomas Bo Larsen, Magnus Millang and Lars Ranthe as four high school teachers who act on a theory that a certain alcohol level boosts creativity and happiness. They decide to conduct this experiment by maintaining a constant level of inebriation throughout their workday.
Rock has directed three features to date, all comedies, with 2014’s “Top Five” having gotten the best reception. This means we’ll have to wait just a little longer for that “Pootie Tang” sequel. That’s fine, but Rock should know that there’s also an audience out there for that one.
