Kevin Spacey’s thriller “Peter Five Eight” has been picked up for multiple territories including U.K., Africa, Eastern Europe, Israel, Latin America, Spain, Portugal, Scandinavia, Middle East, Russia/CIS and, yes, the United States.
We now have the first U.S. trailer for “Peter Five Eight”. I’m not sure if this trailer is purposely trying to make the film look awful, but it sure is presented as total and utter camp.
The film, which also stars Rebecca De Mornay and Jet Jandreau, will receive a U.S. release in August. This is set to be Spacey’s first film since 2018’s “Billionaire Boys Club.” Here’s the official synopsis:
“Peter Five Eight” is a comedic thriller in which Spacey plays Peter, a charismatic man in a black sedan, who shows up in a small mountainside community. Jandreau plays Sam, a glamorous real estate agent who is revealed to be unhinged and a troubled alcoholic with a dark secret, while De Mornay plays Brenda, whom Peter targets for information at the urging of his powerful and shadowy boss, Mr. Lock.
Last June, Spacey mentioned that he was attempting an acting comeback. The actor was convinced that people would start hiring him again, for more acting projects, if he was cleared of the sexual assault charges against him in London. He was cleared, but I doubt he’ll get beyond starring in these micro indie films.
However, there’s always European money. Other countries have been more forgiving towards Spacey — what he now needs to find is a marquee European filmmaker willing to hire him. Or maybe, Paul Schrader hires him for his next film?
Schrader has vehemently defended Spacey over the years. Schrader’s defense of Spacey, one of the key figures of #MeToo caused some pushback, but he still remains firm in his belief that the actor should not be blacklisted from Hollywood:
People responded as if I had said I would kick a homeless man … I mean, Kevin Spacey is a great actor. He won two Oscars. He was found not guilty. Why would I not work with him?
Spacey appears to have emerged from his legal troubles unscathed. He’s won two separate cases against him, but nobody wants to hire him in Hollywood. His name has been tarnished. It’s led to the actor now starring in these micro-budget indies, such as “Peter Five Eight,” and “Control.”
Before the initial accusations against him emerged in the summer of 2017, Spacey had a reputation as one of the great actors in the industry. His filmography includes the likes of “American Beauty,” “L.A. Confidential,” “Glengary Glen Ross,” “Se7en,” and Netflix’s “House of Cards.”
