I can confirm as an exclusive that Aubrey Plaza has been cast as the lead in John Waters’ upcoming “Liarmouth.” Being discussed is a production start this summer in Waters’ home city of Baltimore.
We were already anticipating Waters’ “Liarmouth,” which is set to be the filmmaker’s first film in almost 20 years but adding Plaza to the mix only amps up our excitement further.
The project was announced in 2022 and the strikes seemed to have delayed it, but Waters has completed the script, and a budget is currently being assembled. The good news is that this project is indeed moving ahead. Further casting should be announced shortly. Suffice to say, a Waters and Plaza team up is just what the doctor ordered.
“Liarmouth,” based on Waters’ own novel, follows con artist Marsha Sprinkle, who is described as “a suitcase thief, scammer, and master of disguise. Dogs and children hate her. Her own family wants her dead. She’s smart, she’s desperate, she’s disturbed, and she’s on the run with a big chip on her shoulder. They call her Liarmouth―until one insane man makes her tell the truth.”
In 2022, Plaza told Dazed that when the news broke about Waters’s next film, “I emailed him immediately and said, ‘you better let me audition for you. I even look like the girl on the cover” of the book. “I’m throwing myself at his feet,” she added. “I’ll do anything to get the part. I mean anything.”
I abide by the church of Aubrey Plaza. Her filmography includes “Emily the Criminal,” “Ingrid Goes West,” and “The To Do List.” She is also set to appear in Francis Ford Coppola’s upcoming epic “Megalopolis.”
As mentioned, this will be Waters’ first film in almost two decades. His last filthy creation was 2004’s “A Dirty Shame.” Waters is the iconoclast filmmaker behind “Pink Flamingos,” “Polyester,” “Serial Mom,” and “Hairspray.” This sicko world needs a new John Waters movie and it should be coming very shortly.
