“True Detective: Night Country,” the fourth season of ‘True Detective,’ written and directed by Mexican filmmaker Issa López, ended on Sunday night.
Despite the positive reviews, I’ve only seen the first four episodes and wasn’t particularly taken by its mix of the supernatural and true crime. I find the last three seasons of ‘True Detective’ were just not worthy of the original season.
With that said, ‘True Detective’ creator Nic Pizzolatto is not a happy camper. He’s responsible for that incredible first season with Matthew Mcconaughey and Woody Harrelson. Still, seasons two and three were disappointments, and Pizzolatto was let go as the creative mastermind and in came Rae for season 4.
Pizzolatto has been openly critical about the female-led fourth season starring Jodie Foster and Kali Reis. He believes the fourth season ruined the spirit of what he had created, adding that Rae’s decision to connect this last season with his own iconic first one was “stupid.”
It doesn’t help that the finale had even more connections to season one, including a mention of the iconic “time is a flat circle” line of dialogue spoken by Matthew McConaughey.
This seems to have been the last straw for Pizzolatto. He has had enough and cemented his discontent on Monday in comments that have since been deleted, but the internet doesn’t forget. He even ended up replying to a person criticizing him for his “horrible misogyny.” Pizzolatto’s response was defiant:
In all likelihood, Pizzalotto believes this fourth season “butchered and misappropriated” the first season’s “all time classic dialogue,” describing the season as a “hot mess” and criticizing the finale’s reveal as “self righteous vigilantism.”
If you remember, Pizzolatto had originally teased a pitch for the fourth season back in 2019, but he suddenly left the project. He is still listed as an executive producer on ‘True Detective’, so he’s making money off of the new season even though he’s not involved and, by all accounts, hates it.
