UPDATED: McKay is not the directing, and only producing the film.
EARLIER: Last December, I broke the news that Netflix had dropped Adam McKay’s “Average Height, Average Build.” McKay then quickly jumped into a new project, this one about climate change. No plot details or casting had been announced.
What I can report is that filming on the project is scheduled to begin in Australia in May. It’s called “The Rising.” It does look as though things are rolling for this film. The description is also very weird, involving sharks and a hurricane.
Members of a coastal community try to survive when they are attacked by sharks during a hurricane.
Strange, right? You’d think this was a ‘Sharknado’ ripoff, but given that this is McKay, and the film is being described as tackling “climate change,” I would expect something far different. Regardless, a cast will surely be announced very shortly.
Sony Pictures is in charge of this one. We can probably expect a 2025 release for “The Rising.” McKay is coming off his ultra popular 2021 Netflix dramedy “Don’t Look Up.” His other credits include “The Big Short,” “Vice” and “Anchorman.”
