I was a Timothée Chalamet skeptic for many years, but he’s proven me wrong these last few years with a handful of strong performances. This to say that Chalamet has just been named Best Actor by the Boston Society of Film Critics for his remarkable turn in James Mangold’s “A Complete Unknown.”
It’s no secret that this year’s actor Oscar is Adrien Brody’s to lose, but I’m starting to suspect that his biggest competition will be Chalamet who IS Bob Dylan in James Mangold’s biopic. He doesn’t miss a step in the film. It’s wholly energizing work on his part, and I’ll have more to say about this performance when the embargo for ‘Unknown’ breaks on Tuesday.
So, Brody, Chalamet, and who else to fill out the remaining three slots inside this year’s Best Actor category? More than likely you’ll have the long overdue Ralph Fiennes (“Conclave”) as our #3, and Colman Domingo (“Sing Sing”) at #4. Brody, Chalamet, Fiennes and Domingo are practically locked up at this point.
This means we have one final slot remaining, and it’s anybody’s guess who will take it. My money’s currently on Daniel Craig, excellent in “Queer,” in what might be career peak work for the British actor formerly known as Bond. He’ll have close competition coming in for that final slot coming from the likes of Sebastian Stan (“The Apprentice”), and Jesse Eisenberg (“A Real Pain”).
