A trailer for James Gunn’s “Superman” has been unleashed online. What do you think?
This is certainly better than expected, and it does look well shot. The iconic John Williams score always gives me goosebumps. Most of it works, but I have this nagging feeling we’re going to again be getting the entire city of Metropolis turned into rubble ala Zack Snyder’s “Man of Steel.” Also, what’s the deal with that fire breathing dragon?
I’ve mentioned, countless times, the amount of pressure Gunn has in making “Superman” — it’s unheard of. Warner Bros and David Zaslav are betting all of their chips on Gunn’s DCU and if it gets off to a rocky start then heads will start to roll. There are billions at stake here.
Will there be a big enough audience for this $300M+ costing Superman? The character has been rebooted numerous times over the years, and with mixed results. Batman and Spider-Man are the more popular comic book characters for movie audiences. Hell, even Iron Man and Captain America seem to pull in a larger audiences.
As it stands, the last great Superman movie was released almost 45 years ago, that would be Richard Donner’s “Superman II,” released in 1980. Maybe Gunn has delivered something special here, who knows, but it can’t be the same old, same old — we need something fresh.
The film, which wrapped production in July, is set to star David Corenswet as the Man of Steel, Rachel Bronahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor; the rest of the cast includes Skyler Gisondo, Anthony Carrigan and Isabela Merced.
“Superman” will be released worldwide July 11, 2025
