This isn’t much of a surprise.
With HBO’s “The Penguin” having successfully aired its first season, Colin Farrell recently revealed that he’d signed on to play the character in two more of Matt Reeves’ ‘Batman’ movies. The plan is for him to appear in “five or six scenes” in “The Batman: Part II,” which is set to be shot in mid-2025.
Reeves is now saying that talks have officially started about a second season of ‘Penguin,’ which was met with much praise and audience adoration in November (via Variety):
Yeah, we’re talking to [showrunner] Lauren [LeFranc] about doing another season. That was a special experience. I just feel really fortunate. These characters don’t belong to me; they belong to the world. It comes down to whether you can approach them in a way that expresses something personal.
The spinoff series, set after the death of crime boss Carmine Falcone, focused on crime villain Oswald Copplepot, aka The Penguin (played by Colin Farrell). The story has Oz seeking to seize control of the Gotham underworld in the power vacuum created by the death of his former boss, Carmine Falcone.
After much delay on my part, I recently finished watching the first season, and despite a few wobbly inconsistencies, was really taken in by the world building and Farrell’s impressive performance.
Farrell, nearly unrecognizable, in extremely heavy prosthetic makeup, is incredibly invested in this character and his backstory, and it translated into a strong spin-off. The first episode has now pulled in nearly 20M viewers since it debuted on September 19, and the series finale is about to equal and surpass it soon.
“The Penguin” remains the most-watched current HBO or Max title debut season globally behind only “House of the Dragon” and “The Last of Us.”
