Werner Herzog Set to Direct His First Animated Film

December 13, 2024 Jordan Ruimy

Since 1968, Werner Herzog has directed 20 fiction feature films, and 34 documentary feature films. Some of his most iconic works include “Aguirre The Wrath of God,” “Fitzcarraldo,” “Lessons of Darkness” and “Grizzly Man.”

Herzog is shooting his next project, and it’s animated. “The Twilight of the World” is an adaptation on the novel that tells the story of the Japanese soldier Hiro Onoda who, after the end of World War II, hid in the jungles for 30 years, convinced that he was still fighting a war. French filmmaker Arthur Harari already directed an excellent film on the topic, 2021’s “Onoda.”

Herzog is teaming with scribes Tekkon Kinkreet's Michael Arias on this one. The film is being described as “part fictionalized history, part drama and part dream log.” “The Twilight World” is said to be a meditation on the nature of reality, the illusion of time, and the conflict between the external world and our inner lives.

No release date has been revealed for “The Twilight of the World,” which clocks in at 85 minutes. The last fiction Herzog directed was 2019’s “Family Romance, LLC.”
