UPDATE: THR’s Borys Kit is disputing that Kinberg’s trilogy will be episodes 9-12. Kit’s sources tell him that it's NOT a continuation of the Skywalker Saga but rather a new story focused on new characters, a “new path forward,” he’s told.
EARLIER: This is coming down the wire. Lucasfilm has closed a deal with Simon Kinberg to develop and write a new trilogy of Star Wars films, and produce them with Lucasfilm chief Kathleen Kennedy.
Deadline’s hearing that the trilogy might be episodes 10-12 of The Skywalker Saga. “The Rise of Skywalker,” released in 2019, was episode 9; does this mean we’re getting more of Daisey Ridley’s Rey? Some insiders are disputing Deadline’s intel that it’ll be a continuation of the last trilogy.
Kinberg previously worked with Lucasfilm in co-creating the animated series “Star Wars Rebels” (2014-2018). He was also a consultant on “Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens.” His non-SW writing credits include “X-Men: First Class,” “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” “The Martian,” and “Logan.”
Then again, Kinberg has also written a ton of mediocrity: “Jumper,” “Fantastic Four,” “This Means War,” “X-Men: Apocalypse,’ “Dark Phoenix,” “The New Mutants,” “Let’s Be Cops,” “The 355,” “Lift” …
Up next in the Star Wars universe is Jon Favreau’s ‘Mandalorian & Grogu.” Not including Kinberg’s trilogy, there are seven other ‘Star Wars’ projects currently in development, from directors James Mangold, Obaid-Chimoy, Dave Filoni, Donald Glover, Shawn Levy and Patty Jenkins.
