If you’re starting to get tired of Quentin Tarantino’s hot takes, here’s another one.
In recent weeks, Tarantino has already tackled ‘Folie a Deux,’ ‘Dune 2’ and Bruce Willis. Speaking on the Video Archives Podcast, the filmmaker is now heaping praise on Nicolas Cage’s eccentric filmography, particularly one of his more recently acclaimed roles in “Pig” (via JoBlo).
“In watching some of the Nic Cage stuff, the one that BLEW ME AWAY was that movie he did, “Pig.” That’s one of the best of the last five years. That’s one of the best movies I’ve seen in the last five years.”
He continued, “He deserves to be proud of it… that guy who directed it did a killer job. He did a really, really terrific job. One of the things that’s great about it, especially after watching all the ‘revenge-o-matics’ we’ve seen, the movie sets it up like all the revenge-o-matics Nic Cage seems to have done in the last five years…this sets itself up to be that only to decidedly not go down that road in the most creative way possible.”
Personally speaking, I thought “Pig,” directed by Michael Sarnoski, was an overpraised film, not as nuanced as it purported to be, and mostly held together by Cage’s stellar performance.
My take on the film is definitely part of the minority opinion as many critics heaped praise on “Pig,” released in 2021, and it ended up being the 7th most listed film on critics top 10 lists that year. Cage has also not been shy in stating that it’s “probably my best movie and I would put it up against “Leaving Las Vegas,” or anything else.”
Sarnoski’s sophomore effort was this year’s “A Quiet Place: Day One,” which was less acclaimed than “Pig,” and he’s set to shoot “The Death of Robin Hood,” starring Hugh Jackman and Jodie Comer, in early 2025.
