This one could easily go so very wrong.
Amazon/MGM are indeed developing a ‘Spaceballs’ sequel that has Josh Gad attached to star. Mel Brooks is set to produce. Josh Greenbaum (“Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar”) will direct the sequel, which Gad co-wrote with Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez (“Detective Pikachu”). Plot details are being kept under wraps.
Speaking to Forbes, Gad says the very supportive people who have read his script have “been blown away” by it. He doesn’t go into specifics, but does lay the groundworks to amp up excitement for some fans:
Everybody who’s read it has been blown away. The process of working on this with and alongside Mel Brooks has been one of the highlights of my career. It was sort of a fever dream that this all happened. Mel has been so unbelievably supportive, involved, and electrified by this because it’s the one that surprisingly got away. It’s a dream to be able to finally make the reality prophesied by Yogurt in the first movie happen.
It’s been 37 years since Brooks’ “Spaceballs” was released in theaters, and the thought of a sequel occurring is as ludicrous as, say, “This is Spinal Tap 2” (which is actually happening). Regardless, Brooks, 98, is clearly not that involved creatively, and that’s already a major omission to the spirit of the original.
