UPDATE: Deadline and THR have confirmed Pattinson’s casting.
EARLIER: According to Daniel Richtman, Robert Pattinson is being eyed for a role in Christopher Nolan's next film. So far, the cast includes Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong’o and Zendaya. The film starts production this January and will be shooting in numerous countries across Europe.
No word yet on plot details, let alone a title, for Nolan’s next film. It’s being kept top secret and we probably won’t really know anything until next year. I gather a teaser will be released in Summer 2025, and that’s when we’ll probably learn what the movie is called and what subject it might tackle.
Various theories have been posited online about the project. Gizmodo claimed that it was a ‘20s-set Vampire movie. Variety reported that it might be a spy movie. THR heard rumblings about a “father-son” story (which they later recanted). Grace Randolph claimed that it was maybe a “horror film.” Meanwhile, a Reddit rumor suggested that it could be an action movie influenced by 1983’s “Blue Thunder.”
Matt Belloni had previously reported that Nolan started writing the screenplay for this next film back in March, just a few days after “Oppenheimer” triumphed at the Oscars. Universal Pictures will distribute. The film is set for release on July 17, 2026.
Pattinson and Nolan previously teamed up on 2020’s “Tenet.” It was during that shoot of “Tenet” that Pattinson gave Nolan the book “American Prometheus” which would eventually inspire the filmmaker to make “Oppenheimer” three years later.
As to why Pattinson was not part of “Oppenheimer,” Nolan said last year that the actor “was busy” and is “very much in demand these days.” He’s not wrong. Pattinson just wrapped shooting Lynne Ramsay’s “Die, My Love,” is currently in production on Kristofer Borgli’s “The Drama,” and is supposed to shoot “The Batman: Part II” in early 2025.
