UPDATE: A source close to the production negates my report, adding that “additional photography is standard in the business. Especially on large films requiring pick up.”
Disney is very keen on what they have been seeing and the fans supporting. They recently shot additional photography with Onah present and the movie is on track for its February release and with great feedback on assts recently.
EARLIER: I’m hearing that Julius Onah, who had a stellar debut with 2019’s “Luce,” has most likely been replaced as the director of “Captain America: Brave New World” during this latest bout of reshoots.
“He’s in over his head,” one source tells me. Onah will keep his directing credit on ‘Brave New World,’ and he’s being “a good sport about it,” but he’s certainly “not calling the shots” on the movie, which has been plagued by reshoots and a ballooning budget.
It should be noted that Onah was not present at either D23 or D23 Brazil while his film was being showcased, and footage was revealed for the public. With that said, I’m being told he is still planning to promote the film next year when the ‘Brave New World’ gets released in February 2025.
The first round of reshoots on ‘Brave New World’ occurred earlier in the year. Daniel Richtman had reported that Marvel, who got to see a rough cut of the film, felt the action scenes “were not big or satisfying enough.” A poorly rated test-screening didn’t help. Word was that three major action sequences were being reshot from scratch. No word yet on the goal of the latest reshoots which are supposed to go on until the end of the month.
Matthew Orton was hired by Marvel to pen additional scenes and material. Orton’s work is being shot in this latest bout of additional photography which includes star Anthony Mackie, Giancarlo Esposito and Danny Ramirez.
‘Brave New World’ had originally wrapped filming in June 2023, and was set for a July 2024 release date before being finally delayed. The budget is said to be nearing the $400M mark, which spells major trouble for Marvel who were banking on Mackie’s Captain America to be one of the key characters in the post-Endgame MCU..
It’s a real bummer that Onah has to go through this ordeal — he was a Sundance darling in 2019 for directing the excellent “Luce,” which I highly recommend. Now, he’s been zapped into the Marvel machine.
