UPDATE: THR is reporting that it’s not “The Prisoner.”
EARLIER: Christopher Nolan's next film has been announced. The untitled project is set for release on July 17th, 2026. Expect some leaks about story and casting details to emerge in the coming days and weeks.
Sources are saying that Nolan is returning to Universal for his next film, and Matt Damon is in talks to star. Nolan will be directing from a script he wrote and will produce with Emma Thomas through their Syncopy banner. An early 2025 shoot is being eyed.
Damon, who had supporting roles in Nolan’s “Interstellar” and “Oppenheimer,” is part of Hollywood’s A-list actors. His filmography spans four decades and includes “Good Will Hunting,” “Saving Private Ryan,” “The Talented Mr. Ripley,” “Ocean’s Eleven,” “The Bourne Identity,” “The Departed,” “The Martian,” and “Ford v Ferrari.”
Back in March, Puck’s Matt Belloni reported that Nolan had begun writing his next film. Obviously, no plot details were revealed. As with all Nolans, it’ll most likely be kept hush-hush until the very end, actors will have to read the script in a quiet room etc.
The post-’Dark Knight’ phase of Nolan’s filmography has consisted of going back and forth between historical drama and sci-fi — 2014’s “Interstellar,” 2017’s “Dunkirk,” 2020’s “Tenet,” and 2023’s “Oppenheimer.” Notice how there’s a three-year gap in between each film. This one seems to be no exception.
Most of Nolan’s films are darkly themed, he’s never made a light movie, so don’t expect a romcom any time soon. So, what are the Vegas odds? Nolan recently hinted his desire in delving into the horror genre. He’s also mentioned how he does not want his follow-up to be as “bleak” as “Oppenheimer.”
However, one particular project has been heavily rumored as being Nolan’s next film. Earlier in the year, Variety had heard murmurs Nolan’s long-gestating remake of the mystery-thriller “The Prisoner,” based on the 1960s TV series, was up next for him.
In 2006, Nolan had been tipped to write and direct the film adaptation of the TV series. He couldn’t quite “crack” the adaptation, he said, and eventually left the project in 2009. In November 2023, Nolan revealed his frustration at not being able to finish the script for “The Prisoner.” Has he now gone back to it?
