UPDATE: Sophie Turner has finally nabbed the role of Lara Croft and is officially in talks to star in Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s reboot (via Deadline).
EARLIER: Is this a good idea? Does Amazon/MGM really want to go down this path? Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s live-action “Tomb Raider” series is definitely happening.
According to Deadline, Sophie Turner (“Game Of Thrones”) and Lucy Boynton (“Bohemian Rhapsody”) are testing for the part of Lara Croft, previously played by Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander. It’s also mentioned how Emma Corrin and Mackenzie Davis may also be in the mix, but they’re refusing to test.
According to Jennifer Salke, Amazon’s TV head, ‘Tomb Raider’ will likely begin filming early next year. Waller-Bridge (“Fleabag”) is not only executive producing, but she’s also writing the entire thing, and might even be directing a few episodes.
“Tomb Raider” is really exciting and Phoebe is well into it and working in close partnership with [“Tomb Raider” general manager] Dallas Dickinson and the game producers, and it’s going to be very exciting.
One of the most talked about Amazon TV deals of the pandemic era was Amazon’s rumored $60 million partnership with Waller-Bridge. Despite a lack of successful shows, Salke has defended the Waller-Bridge deal, and recently told Variety that Waller-Bridge, who is “obsessed” and “grew up playing Tomb Raider,” is the perfect creative to manage this reboot.
