Awards season is upon us, and THR’s most buzzed title is making a push later this year, it’s called “September 5.” The dramatic thriller about ABC Sports’ coverage of the 1972 Munich Olympics terrorist attack in which Palestinian militants took hostage Israeli athletes. The story is told from the perspective of the broadcasters.
Paramount Pictures has now released a trailer. What do you think? This is not another “Munich,” which tackled a different side of the the tragedy, but rather a very different story based on the same event. This is definitely Paramount's big Oscar push should “Gladiator II” fail expectations.
The plan is to have “September 5” hit theaters in late November, and expand it into wider release in December. Reviews for the film have been good (76 on Metacritic) with many comparing it to newsroom dramas like “All the President’s Men” and “Spotlight.”
Directed by Tim Fehlbaum, “September 5” stars Ben Chaplin, Leonie Benesch, Zinedine Soualem, Corey Johnson, Georgina Rich, and Benjamin Walker. It had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival on August 29, but was rejected by TIFF in fear of causing controversy related to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
