With the Hulu documentary “Brats” bringing back nostalgic memories of the “Brat Pack” and “St. Elmo’s Fire,” Sony is greenlighting a sequel to the 1985 coming-of-age film.
In June, it had been reported that Sony was exploring all options for the “St. Elmo’s Fire” sequel. The original had a cast that included Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, Judd Nelson, Andie MacDowell, and Ally Sheedy.
Rob Lowe is now teasing that all of the actors mentioned are coming back. In an interview with SiriusXM’s “Let’s Talk Off Camera with Kelly Ripa,” Lowe confirmed that the full cast of the original 1985 film are confirmed for the sequel, and that Moore has especially been instrumental to the revival.
“We’re very much in contact now because we are actively trying to do ‘St. Elmo’s Fire’ sequel,” Lowe said. “I have been waiting for [the sequel] for 20 years, 25 years.”
“It’s moving along. It’s going a little more slowly than I would have liked, but that’s a good thing because we’re trying to find the right writer and the right story,” Lowe said. “But all of the actors, everybody is onboard. Everybody’s excited.”
The late Joel Schumacher directed the original, based on a script he co-wrote with Carl Kurlander. The sequel would tackle the characters in present day and find out what happened in their lives. No director is attached. They don’t even have a script, but it looks like Sony wants to make this one happen.
The 1985 film, centering on a clique of recent graduates, and their adjustment to post-university life, received negative reviews from critics but was a box-office hit, grossing $37.8M on a $10M budget. Rob Lowe also won the Razzie for Worst Supporting Actor.
