It looks like things are moving much quicker than expected on Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu’s untitled Tom Cruise project.
Variety is reporting that, while the start date is yet to be confirmed, it could be as early as next month. I was recently told that January was the target date, but they might now be shooting a month or two earlier. That’s great news for a potential 2025 release.
Cruise teaming up with the Oscar winning Iñàrritu on this as-of-yet-untitled film is a cant-miss proposition. It helps that the ensemble for this one is absolutely stacked, and includes Sandra Hüller, Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons and Sophie Wilde.
Not much in terms of plot details, but it’s clear that Cruise is the lead. As far as we’ve learned, Iñàrritu’s film centers “on the most powerful man in the world, who embarks on a frantic mission to prove he is humanity’s savior before the disaster he’s unleashed destroys everything”.
Inarritu co-wrote the script in 2023 with “Birdman” writers Nicolas Giacobone and Alexander Dinelaris, along with Sabina Berman. This will be Cruise’s first film since signing with Warner Bros. Discovery in January. His last project with the studio was 2014’s “Edge of Tomorrow.”
What the November production start also means is that Cruise, who was seen performing stunts on ‘Mission: Impossible 8’ earlier in the month, is almost done shooting that film. He’ll be having a very busy 2025 promoting ‘M:I8,’ the Iñárritu and shooting Christopher McQuarrie’s “Broadsword” in July/August.
Meanwhile, Iñárritu will be directing his first film since the critically panned “Bardo,” which premiered at Venice 2022. His most notable works include “Amores Perros,” “Birdman,” “The Revenant,” “Babel,” and “21 Grams.”
