While ‘Mission: Impossible 8’ is still filming, Tom Cruise has booked two films, set to shoot in 2025, and they’re both non-IP films.
Firstly, there’s Cruise teaming up with Alejandro G. Iñàrritu on an as of yet untitled film. The cast for this one is stacked. Joining Cruise is an ensemble that includes Sandra Hüller, Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons and Sophie Wilde. A shoot during Q1 2025 is being prepped up for the film.
The synopsis on this one is fairly cryptic, but it’s clear Cruise is the lead, and it’s no doubt being positioned as an Oscar vehicle for him. As far as we know, Iñàrritu’s film centers “on the most powerful man in the world, who embarks on a frantic mission to prove he is humanity’s savior before the disaster he’s unleashed destroys everything”.
Once production on Inarritu’s film is completed, Cruise will have to do the promotional rounds for ‘Mission: Impossible 8,’ which comes out on May 23, 2025. A Cannes premiere is not out of the question for the film, especially given the success of “Top Gun: Maverick” which also had a splashy and very successful bow on the Croisette two years ago.
Then Cruise will hop onboard his second 2025 production as he is set to shoot Christopher McQuarrie’s “Broadsword” in July. The film is rumored to co-star Oscar winner Marion Cotillard and Henry Cavill. “Broadsword” is based on a original story by McQuarrie, and the project has been gaining some steam in recent months.
“Broadsword,” set during WWII, will tell the story of an S.O.E. operation and a marine captain who crashes in France and becomes the sole survivor. Against all odds, he must complete his mission amidst the chaos of war.
Pure speculation, but I wouldn’t be surprised if 2026 is the year Cruise shoots ‘Top Gun 3.’ ‘Maverick’ co-star Glen Powell had confirmed that there was a “holding date” for the sequel to begin production, and that a script was indeed being written for the film.
