Stanley Kubrick, possibly the greatest director that ever lived, kept his political views to himself. It was very hard to pin down what he believed in — he didn’t seem to be party political in any traditional sense, but definitely had a deep distrust of power and authority. You could immediately tell that by watching his films.
With that said, his daughter, Vivian Kubrick, is now making waves with a recent X post that has her utterly convinced that her late father would have been a “Trump supporter” if he were alive today:
Truthfully, I believe my father (who supported Reagan), would very much approve of saving America, indeed the world, from the highly destructive Globalist forces threatening to take over this planet.
My father had a great respect for life - his movies being unimpeachable evidence of his love for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness! So on that basis, I feel very confident he would be a Trump supporter and would forgive using FMJ incongruously, if it helps the cause of freedom!
Having read many books about Kubrick, who was very much a man who kept to himself, refusing to have details of his personal life leak out publicly, it’s very hard to know where he would stand politically today. Would Trump’s “anti-establishment” message resonate deeply with him, or would he be revolted by him?
The very little that we do know about Kubrick’s private life includes the fact that he owned guns, was against the “welfare state,” saw himself as a “capitalist” and believed in small government. There was also a story about his hinting that he’d leave the UK if the Labour Party won the election in the late ‘90s.
Michael Herr, who co-wrote “Full Metal Jacket,” had a Kubrick memoir recounting all of these details. Of course, the world has drastically changed since his passing, and guessing a dead man’s political allegiances in 2024 is a fool’s errand.
