A few days ago, I wrote having heard that “Terrifier 3” might open as high as $20M this coming weekend. Many didn’t believe it. I’m sticking with that figure, especially after having seen last night’s numbers.
It’s looking like Damien Leone’s film earned $3M in Thursday previews. What’s even more impressive is that, when compared to its rivals, showings for ‘Terrifier 3’ didn’t even begin until 8pm. In fact, ‘Terrifier 3’ just made its entire budge back in just a single evening of screenings.
It’s turning into quite the story, and a major reason for the success has to do with the skyrocketing fanbase this franchise has had. If you want to compare, the entire domestic run for ‘Terrifier 2’ amounted to a $10M total — a figure that ‘Terrifier 3’ will likely surpass by Saturday morning.
I’m not a fan of this franchise; the first one was a watchable curiosity, and the second instalment fell flat for me, but I’m pulling hard for its success. Hollywood needs to be given a hard-earned lesson in that you can make a film with a small budget ($2M) and still be competitive. Case in point, ‘Joker: Folie a Deux,’ which has a budget 100x the total of ‘Terrifier 3’ and is now destined to lose the weekend, in just its second week of release.
