With Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s planned Rey having been put “on hold”, the only thing that Lucasfilm has got going for it right now is the success of their Disney Plus show ‘The Mandalorian.’ It’s no coincidence then that Lucasfilm has decided to bet all of its chips on a ‘Mandalorian’ movie, set to be directed by Jon Favreau.
So it happens, according to one of the show’s stars, Giancarlo Esposito, “The Mandalorian & Grogu” is being planned as a trilogy of films, or maybe more. This makes sense. “The Mandalorian,” which aired its first three seasons on Disney Plus, is a very popular show, and Lucasfilm is now banking on its streaming audience to watch it in theaters.
Pedro Pascal is returning as titular bounty hunter Din Djarin. Sigourney Weaver joins him in an undisclosed role, while showrunner Favreau is in the director's chair. “The Mandalorian & Grogu” is set to hit theaters May 22, 2026.
There are six other ‘Star Wars’ projects currently in development, from directors Obaid-Chimoy, James Mangold, Dave Filoni, Jon Favreau, Donald Glover, Shawn Levy and Patty Jenkins. “The Mandalorian and Grogu” is coming first, the others will likely remain, for the time being, in development.
