In October, I reported that Bong Joon-ho’s “Mickey 17” would most likely have its March 29, 2024 release delayed to the summer. I reconfirmed it last week. Well, it took almost four months for Warner Bros to officially announce it, but better late than never. The wording they’re using is “delayed indefinitely.”
It was obviously not going to be released three months from now — there’s been barely any promotional material for the film, save for a 30 second teaser, and I kept hearing that David Zaslav wanted it to premiere at Cannes. So, that’s probably what will happen now.
Last August, the film had a great test screening, the people I spoke to were very impressed by the film and its usage of practical effects. You can read the rave reaction that I published on 06.09.23. It was screened without a score, lack of sound design and around 75% of the VFX completed.
”Mickey 17” is set to be Bong’s first film since his Palme d’Or and Oscar winning “Parasite,” released in 2019 — you would have to imagine that, not just Bong, but also Cannes boss Thierry Fremaux would love to have “Mickey 17” show up on the Croisette this coming May. It’s certainly one of the most anticipated films of the year.
