Jo Koy Admits He Had an “Off Night” as Golden Globes Host

Jo Koy knows he messed up as the host of the 2024 Golden Globes. I don’t think there’s any way to spin it. His jokes fell flat. You can watch his full 10-minute monologue here. Word of caution: it ain’t pretty.

This morning, the stand-up comedian cleared the air with “Good Morning America” admitting he had an “off night” MC’ing the ceremony. He also went on to blame the joke writing, and how he was clearly unprepared to host.

“That’s a tough gig, I’m not going to lie,” Koy said. “I wanted to give a little bit more of me, and I fell a little short. That’s all.”

He continued, “I had fun. You know, it was a moment that I’ll always remember. It’s a tough room. It was a hard job, I’m not going to lie…I’d be lying if [I said] it doesn’t hurt. I hit a moment there where I was like, ‘Ah.’ Hosting is just a tough gig. Yes, I’m a stand-up comic but that hosting position it’s a different style. I kind of went in and did the writer’s thing. We had 10 days to write this monologue. It was a crash course. I feel bad, but I got to still say I loved what I did.”

The worst part is Koy, on stage, blamed his writers when the jokes would fall flat. “Some [jokes] I wrote, some other people wrote,” Koy said after the audience was silent following a punchline. “Yes, I got the gig 10 days ago! You want a perfect monologue? Yo, shut up. You’re kidding me, right? Slow down, I wrote some of these and they are the ones you are laughing at.”

A few weeks ago, a report revealed that the Globes were desperately looking for a host to emcee the ceremony. The likes of Chris Rock, Ali Wong, and Will Arnett declined offers. Smart move by them.

“It’s not worth it,” a top publicist told CNN. “There are a lot of politics. It’s not easy and it’s not fun anymore,” they added. “It’s a thankless job” another publicist chided.

Do you blame a lesser-known comedian like Koy to have accepted the offer? It’s quite simple, really — either you hire a host at the start, or several months in advance, or you go hostless like the Oscars did a few years ago. Koy was put in a ridiculously tough situation, and he just didn’t have sufficient talent to pull it off.
