Neon is really pushing hard for us to be intrigued by Oz Perkins’ upcoming “Longlegs,” and know what? It’s working. They’ve released three cryptic teasers so far, all unveiled on a Friday, and now there’s word of an actual trailer coming in three days’ time.
Also, four posters were released this afternoon, all well-designed, with a niche ‘70s look, and intriguing enough to have us look forward to Friday’s preview. You can check them all out at the end of this article.
Neon must have a lot of confidence in this film. It matches the very positive intel that came out of last year’s test screening. So far, all three teasers have hinted at serial killers — 911 calls, an FBI investigation. There have been a few blink-and-you'll-miss crime scene shots. There also seems to be some kind of religious component involving prayers, veiled figures, cults etc.
The film stars Maika Monroe and Nicolas Cage. Production on the film wrapped in March 2023. Cage has called “Longlegs” a "possessed Geppetto" movie. Whatever he meant by that, it does look like a wild ride.
Here’s the synopsis:
Lee Harker, a talented new FBI agent, has been assigned to an unsolved case of a serial killer. As the investigation becomes more complicated and occult evidence is uncovered, Harker realizes a personal link to the ruthless killer and must act quickly to prevent another family murder.
“Longlegs” has been described as a “horror-thriller.” It currently has no release date, but it’s definitely coming out in 2024. If I had to guess, signs are pointing towards a summer release.
At a recent test screening, one of our readers raved about it, saying “It’s very unsettling and deeply steeped in the satanic panic of the ‘70s serial killer horror.” You can read their full reaction here.
Perkins is best known for his 2015 indie debut, “The Blackcoat’s Daughter” and 2020’s “Gretel & Hansel.” This latest film actually screened at last year’s EFM market in Berlin, where a bidding war ensued for its rights — Neon finally prevailed.
