Last October, Disney decided to delay the release of its controversial live-action “Snow White” by nearly a year. It is now set to open on March 21, 2025. Why the delay?
Principal photography on “Snow White” began on March 7, 2022 and wrapped in June 2022. So, it’ll be released almost three years after production had wrapped. There had been rumors of reshoots having been called on the film, but now I can confirm those rumors as factual.
After a few outlets reported on Snow White’s current status, I did some digging on the weekend and it turns out that four weeks of reshoots did definitely occur in the summer of 2023, more specifically in June, right before the strike. The goal was to insert more flashbacks into “Snow White,” featuring actress Emilia Faucher as a younger version of Snow White.
Now, I don’t know if the insertion of Faucher and these flashbacks means that Rachel Zegler, who plays the older version of Snow White, will have some of her scenes cut out of the finished version, but there is speculation that could possibly be the case.
Despite the delays, the mouse house did release the first official image of the film last year, which can be seen above. It was surprisingly blurry, and featured Snow White with CGI dwarfs.
According to Forbes, Disney spent $209.3 million to produce the upcoming live-action “Snow White”. The Daily Mail (not the most reliable source, mind you) reported that figure to actually be $330 million.
“Snow White” was written by none other than Greta Gerwig and is being directed by Marc Webb (“500 Days of Summer”). It stars Zegler and Gal Gadot and is set to be released in theaters on March 22nd, 2024.
The original 1937 film was directed by a few animators, one of whom was the late David Hand. Hand’s son, also named David, called this reimagining of his dad’s film a “disgrace,” and that Walt Disney and his dad would be “turning in their graves” if they were alive to see the new version.
