Last week, I wrote about some intel I gathered concerning Pedro Almodóvar’s “The Room Next Door.” I had heard that Julianne Moore was part of the cast. We had previously reported (via Les Inrock) on Tilda Swinton also taking part in the film.
Suffice to say, both Moore and Swinton were confirmed by Almodóvar today. There’s still no word on yet who the third lead actress in the film might be. However, we can also add John Turturro as being part of the cast — he’ll have a supporting role in “The Room Next Door.”
There’s also a more detailed synopsis for the film, via Spanish outlet Cadenaser, and it sounds like a very Almodóvar-esque melodrama:
The story of an imperfect mother and a spiteful daughter, separated by a great misunderstanding. The mother, played by Swinton, is a war reporter. While Moore will play an autofiction writer, friend of the mother.
The film is said to portray how “death, friendship and sexual pleasure can fight life’s horrors" according to Almodóvar.
Almodóvar will be shooting “The Room Next Door” in March. The film, set in New York City, will be the filmmaker’s first full-length English-language film. He’d previously directed two shorts in English, “The Human Voice” and “Strange Way of Life.” Almodóvar has stated that they were just warm-ups to get him accustomed to directing English-speaking actors.
Almodóvar has had a storied filmmaking career since his 1980 debut “Pepi, Luci, Bom.” His most notable works include “Talk to Her,” “The Skin I Live In,” “Pain and Glory,” “Broken Embraces,” and “Women on the Verge of A Nervous Breakdown.”
