Matthew Vaughn’s “Kick-Ass” (2010) was a strong superhero movie that brought a bloody, gleeful and visually appealing R-rated twist to the genre. Nicolas Cage was great, as was Chloe Grace Moretz as his potty-mouthed daughter.
However, the sequel sucked. It was terrible. The reviews were terrible. The box-office was terrible. And that was the end of the franchise. Or so we thought …
Speaking to Collider, while was promoting his new film, “Argylle,” Vaughn says he’s currently writing the script for a reboot of the franchise.
“We’re halfway through [the script]. There’s a very, very dare I say it… and it’s gonna be a cliche coming out of this head of mine. It is a very, very meta universe […] It is what, you know, ‘Kick-Ass’ was reinventing and creating a R-rated superhero and no one was really doing it. This is taking that whole concept to a worthy…not even a sequel, because I think it’s just a whole new way of doing ‘Kick-Ass,’ which couldn’t be more ‘Kick-Ass.’
That sounds horrible. These comments go along with Vaughn’s previous comments about the reboot being “totally different and more reflective of the times we're in.”
Vaughn seems confident about there being real, actual plans to film a new ‘Kick-Ass’ movie next year — a reimagining and/or a reboot, and not a sequel with the existing cast. We didn’t really need this. Nobody asked for it.
To make matters worse. Vaughn’s plan is to make this reboot the third film of a brand-new trilogy.
The trilogy will be ‘School Fight,’ this movie, let’s call it ‘Vram’ for the time being, and then ‘Kick-Ass,’ and they’re all connected
“School Fight” is a film that that’s already been shot, produced by Vaughn and directed by Damien Walters. “Vram” is a film that is apparently currently in production. So, we have these two films that will be the lead-ins to the new “Kick-Ass.”
When it was released, almost 14 years ago, “Kick-Ass” changed people's perception of what a superhero film could be. One can easily say, with a straight face, that without “Kick-Ass” we might not have gotten the “Deadpool” movies. However, there’s nothing new, fresh or exciting about rebooting this story. Been there, done that.
