Last week, Jeff Sneider reported that director Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan were working on a Vampire movie.
Secrecy was so tight on Coogler’s latest project, to be produced by his own Proximity Media, that execs had to trek to the offices of WME just to read the script. Judging by the cautious steps being taken here, you’d swear that this was actually the next Christopher Nolan film.
Deadline is now reporting that three studios are currently in a bidding war for Coogler’s film: Warner Bros, Universal and Sony. They are “battling it out for a deal that would allow Coogler to start production this summer.”
The reason why no streamer, such as Netflix and Apple, are part of this bidding war is due to Coogler’s insistence for his film to have a “full blown global theatrical play.” Warner Bros is said to currently have the edge in winning the rights.
This project is set to be the next film written and directed by Coogler, the filmmaker behind “Creed,” “Fruitvale Station,” Black Panther,” and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever — Jordan has starred in all four of those films.
The untitled project, based on an original idea from Coogler, is being described as a “genre” film with a “period setting.” The budget is reported to be around $90 million. There has also been discussion of potential co-ownership of the IP.
