Greta Gerwig Wants to Direct ‘Lady Bird’ Sequels

January 13, 2024 Jordan Ruimy

Alright, here we go. I have a few things to tackle this afternoon, which is semi-busy in movie news, at least for a Saturday.

Has “Lady Bird” aged well? I haven’t seen it in over six years. At the time, Greta Gerwig’s film was critically acclaimed, and even got nominated for five Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director. I have no desire to give it a rewatch, but I do remember liking its indie-centric humor and the uber personal touch that Gerwig brought to it.

Gerwig is now saying that she wants to make two more films set in Sacramento, including a sequel to Saoirse Ronan’s character in “Lady Bird.” This news supposedly comes from journalist Courtney Howard’s Twitter feed, but I can’t seem to access her profile because she blocked me! Until today, I had never heard of Howard, but the background of her feed is all Barbie, so maybe she read my review.

Anyways, back to regularly scheduled programming …

In February 2018, on an episode of The A24 Podcast, Gerwig had expressed interest in making spiritual successors for “Lady Bird”, saying "I would like to do a quartet of Sacramento films" modeled on the Neapolitan Novels of Elena Ferrante.

That’s all great, going back to your indie roots, a la David Gordon Green, but this might be a few years away as Gerwig is currently under contract, and “in a place of terror,” trying to adapt two ‘Narnia’ films over at Netflix.

Also, according to her agent, Gerwig is looking to move beyond the indie dramas she was known for: "Her ambition is not to be the biggest woman director, but [rather] a big studio director,” via The New Yorker.

That’s her decision and it should be respected. She needs to make a living, that’s understandable. So, anybody dying to see these “Lady Bird” sequels might have to wait a while.
