Variety’s Steven Soderbergh profile mentions how, during the COVID lockdown, the filmmaker wrote a sequel to his 1989 Palme d’Or winner “Sex, Lies, and Videotape.” I actually don’t think this is a bad idea for a film.
The sequel focuses on the sisters and finds Cynthia trying to reconnect with her daughter, who is about to get married. Andie MacDowell and Laura San Giacomo have agreed to be in the film. But now it seems as though Soderbergh might be having second thoughts about the whole thing ..
As Soderbergh is set to return to Sundance, to celebrate the film’s 25th anniversary, he isn’t sure whether he should turn the sequel into a a film or a novel. “It doesn’t feel as of the moment as it did,” he says.
Soderbergh isn’t wrong. Have you recently seen “Sex, Lies and Videotape”? It’s definitely what I would call a product of its time — especially in its thematic resonance. It’s still a very bold and brazen film, and introduced to us one of the great indie auteurs.
