I reported in September that Canadian filmmaker Guy Maddin was going to be shooting a new film, titled “Rumours”. The film has since wrapped production in Hungary.
None other than Cate Blanchett leads the cast of “Rumours,” which is being billed as a “comedy” (although that might be a very loose term considering that this is Guy Maddin we’re talking about here). Blanchett is one of the great actresses of her era and anything she does must be paid attention to.
Here’s more good news, according to Deadline, the film has been sold to Bleecker Street and Alicia Vikander is part of the cast. We also have a synopsis, which makes it sound like the most commercial effort of Maddin’s career:
Rumours follows the seven leaders of the world’s wealthiest liberal democracies at the annual G7 summit after they become lost in the woods and face increasing peril while attempting to draft a provisional statement regarding a global crisis.
Ultra-surrealist Maddin, the man behind “The Saddest Music In The World” and “My Winnipeg,” among many others, is one of the most eccentric filmmakers out there. His last dreamily realized film was 2017’s “The Green Fog.” We can expect “Rumours” to be released in 2024 — maybe a Cannes premiere?
