Ava DuVernay’s “Origin,” which I’ll be watching early next week, is getting decent reviews out of Venice. Nothing more, nothing less. However, don’t be surprised if it wins a prize on Saturday.
Strong reactions come to us from Time, The Wrap, BBC, Variety. That’s about it. The rest are mixed-to-positive.
C from IndieWire, 3/5 from The Guardian, 2/5 from Evening Standard, 3/5 from GamesRadar, B from The Film Stage, mixed reviews from THR, Screen, and Little White Lies.
Written and directed by DuVernay, “Origin” chronicles the true journey of Pulitzer Prize winning author Isabel Wilkerson as she embarks on a quest to find the origins of injustice. She ended up travelling across the world - from Berlin, Germany to India. Stricken by grief at home, Wilkerson turned her professional quest into a therapeutic one, trying to identify the nature of America’s divisions.
