Powered by good reviews, the latest installment in the ‘Saw’ franchise, “Saw X”, is destined to top the box office this weekend (unless “Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie” slightly overperforms).
The tenth entry in the horror franchise nabbed $2M in Thursday previews. It currently sits at 84% on Rotten Tomatoes and 59 on Metacritic — this just goes to prove, yet again, how the latter aggregate is far superior in weighing actual quality.
It’s been well reported that Lionsgate hasn’t spent much money promoting “Saw X.” It’s a well-established franchise, and anyone buying a ticket will likely know what they’re in for.
Gareth Edwards’ science-fiction epic “The Creator” also grossed $1.6 million on Thursday. It will need to do a bit better than that if it wants to recoup that $80M budget. It hopes to overperform overseas, where there seems to be more of a hunger for non-IP Hollywood sci-fi.
