Justine Triet seems to be angry about her film, “Anatomy of A Fall,” not having been selected as the french candidate for the Oscars.
She’s currently reposting a bunch of messages on Instagram that are criticizing the snub, some even hinting at a political decision, punishing her for her Cannes speech where she criticized the politics of the Macron government. Here are a few of the stories that Triet shared on her account. They don’t hide her disdain one bit:
"With the risk of winning the Oscar for best foreign film, France did not select “Anatomy of a Fall”, Palme d'Or winner and box office champion (nearly one million admissions) but, instead, they decided to select one of the most boring films in the official Cannes selection.”
"Having “Anatomy of a fall” not being sent to Oscars … We haven't won awards since 2011. It stinks of revenge, what a bunch of garbage!"
Triet created controversy on May 27, 2023 during the closing ceremony of the 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival. The 44-year-old filmmaker politicized her Palme d’Or winning speech by speaking out about pension reform, police violence and the Macron government.
"This year, the country was crossed by a historic, extremely powerful, unanimous protest of pension reform. This protest has been denied and repressed in a shocking way and this increasingly uninhibited pattern of dominant power is breaking out in several areas, "she said.
Whether the decision was political, or not, France selecting “The Taste of Things” is not a total farce — the film has won over U.S. critics, with some even theorizing that it could get a Best Picture nomination at the Oscars. French critics were way harsher on the film, pointing out the stereotypes in the film that depict French culture in laughably mundane fashion.
I liked both films, but “Anatomy of A Fall” was superior in ways that should have made it the no-brainer pick for France.
