After winning the top award at TIFF, Cord Jefferson’s directorial debut, “American Fiction”, is switching up its release plans from Novemver 3rd to December 15th.
Following that mid-December release date, there will be an expansion on December 22nd. This is a clear push for Oscars. Will it succeed? I loved the film, but it will need major critical backing. Jeffrey Wright deserves all the accolades he’ll be getting for this performance. The script is also tightly ingenious.
Coming out of TIFF, the movie is clocked at 96% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. It also has an 82 on Metacritic. Despite beating “The Holdovers” for TIFF’s People’s Choice Award, I just can’t see it being as big of a crowd pleaser as Payne’s compulsively likeable film.
