Artificial Intelligence is a timely topic these days, which means you’re going to be getting a lot of films tackling it. Here’s one that’s being released next week.
“The Creator” stars John David Washington as the last hope for mankind after A.I. detonates a nuclear warhead on Los Angeles. A trailer for the film was released in the summer.
The social media embargo has lifted on “The Creator,” the usual fanboys have weighed in with hyperbole. There’s a surprising amount of people calling it a “masterpiece” and up there with “Aliens,” and “The Terminator” in the sci-fi pantheon. Good God — have we no shame?
You have flat-out raves from folks like Griff Schiller, The Movie Podcast, Joey Magidson, Hunter Bolding, Courtney Howard, Simon Thompson, Jordie Poblete, Steven Weintraub, Grace Randolph, Brandon Davis, Kristen Maldonado, Big Gold Belt, The Hollywood Handle, and Joe Deckelmeier.
Next Best Picture’s Matt Neglia seems to be the lone dissenting voice. The review embargo only lifts on September 26th, so you won’t be hearing much from me about “The Creator” until then. It’s being released theatrically on September 29th.
The film is directed by Gareth Edwards (“Rogue One,” “Godzilla”), who co-wrote the script with Chris Weitz. The cast includes Washington, Gemma Chan, Allison Janney, Ken Watanabe, and Sturgill Simpson.
The story has to do with a future war between the human race and artificial intelligence. Washington plays ex-special forces. He’s recruited to hunt down and kill The Creator, an architect of advanced A.I. who has developed a mysterious weapon with the power to end mankind. The mission takes place in AI-occupied territory.
