Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” has passed the $900 million mark at the worldwide box-office. It’s still making money in China, so that won’t be its final tally. It’s currently at $912 million.
This 3-hour, black/white movie, purely driven on dialogue, was helped by the ‘Barbenheimer’ phenomenon. There is no reason to believe “Oppenheimer” would have made even half as much without its partner in crime, “Barbie.”
The latest projections have “Oppenheimer” ending its worldwide run at $950 million. Nolan’s film is already the second highest grossing R-rated film in history — “Joker” is at #1 with $1.07 billion in receipts. It’s also surpassed “Bohemian Rhapsody” as the highest grossing biopic of all-time.
Will it hit the billion dollar mark? That’ll be tough. It needs to somehow maintain its legs in China. Regardless, this is great news for Nolan who was coming of the disappointment of “Tenet,” which, truth be told, had been released during the pandemic, but the reviews weren’t very good either.
