What’s Missing? Rose Glass, Bruno Dumont, Jeremy Saulnier, Alex Garland and More

August 17, 2023 Jordan Ruimy

I’ve updated the last “What’s Missing” article. Even though “The Iron Claw,” “The Bikeriders,” “Dream Scenario,” “Strangers,” and “Foe” have release dates, there are still quite a few “orphaned” titles.

Venice, TIFF and NYFF all announced their lineups In these few weeks. We’ll also be getting San Sebastien and Telluride’s selections shortly. In October it’ll be the BFI and AFI selections.

A few films still missing, that were tipped for Cannes, that ended up getting test-screened multiple times, were Alex Garland’s “Civil War” and Rose Glass’ “Love Lies Bleeding.”

Bruno Dumont’s much-anticipated “L’Empire” screened for Cannes in April. I had a source telling me that the VFX work was taking too longer than expected, so why then did it screen for Cannes? It’s one of the most anticipated international films of the year, but we might not get to see it until next year. A Berlin premiere seems to be the rumor.

Duke Johnson’s “The Actor” wrapped production in April. Maybe they’re keeping this one for Sundance and/or Berlin. Ditto Jane Schoenbrun’s “I Saw the TV Glow,” also tipped for Sundance.

I already reported that HULU wasn’t quite sure what to make of Marielle Heller’s polarizing “NightBitch,” starring Amy Adams. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s dumped straight to streaming.

David Michod’s stoner dramedy “Wizards” had been predicted, by some, to premiere at Venice, but it might now be relegated to 2024. Pete Davidson literally eats shit in this movie.

I’ve zeroed in on 25 titles that haven’t been announced yet for any of the fall fests. Thanks to all who contributed in last month’s “What’s Missing,” we now have a clearer picture:

“Love Lies Bleeding” (Rose Glass)
“The Actor” (Duke Johnson)
“Rebel Ridge” (Jeremy Saulnier)
“Civil War” (Alex Garland)
“L’Empire” (Bruno Dumont)
“Wizards” (David Michod)
“NightBitch” (Marielle Heller)
“Limonov” (Kirill Serebrennikov)
“Havoc” (Gareth Evans)
“I Saw the TV Glow” (Jane Schoenbrun)
“Shirley” (John Ridley)
“Silent Night” (John Woo)
“Without Blood” (Angelina Jolie)
“Holland, Michigan” (Mimi Cave)
“Leave the World Behind” (Sam Esmail)
“Apartment 7A“ (Natalie Erika James)
“Duchess” (Neil Marshall)
