While we await for some kind of ending to the actors strike, and John Waters being able to direct his first movie in over 20 years, the writer-director is out there promoting his new novel “Liarmouth.”
Waters was a guest on Bill Maher’s podcast and, in one brief segment of the interview, recommended that the host watch Ari Aster’s “Beau is Afraid,” which he had some effusive praise for:
“You go to downtown San Francisco and now it’s like the beginning of “Beau is Afraid,” have you seen that film? It has some really great shit. It has Joaquin Phoenix, but it’s three hours long and he’s going crazy in the movie. Patti Lupone is sublime”
it’s no surprise that Waters loves Aster’s outrageous film. In a recent interview with a Maine newspaper, Waters was asked which current day filmmakers he found to be on the same wave length as his, this was Waters’ response:
“Not that they imitate me or anything, but – they’re all foreign – I love Gaspar Noé, Bruno Dumont; in America, I like Todd Haynes, Todd Solondz, I like “Beau Is Afraid.” There’s good stuff out there.”
Waters added that “originality” and “nerve” is what distinguishes these filmmakers for him, “f*cking vision and taking big chances.”
A few weeks ago, Waters was a guest at The Waldo Theater in Maine. A reader attended that event and, again, Waters spoke about “Beau is Afraid,” adding that it was his favorite movie of the year.
