The Jury Prize winner (third place) at this year’s Cannes Film Festival was attributed to Aki Kaurismäki’s “Fallen Leaves,” a wonderfully realized love story told via the Finnish filmmaker’s immaculately deadpan style.
The story is simple: He’s a drunk, she’s out of work. They’re both lonely souls. It’s romantic and sweet-natured, finding genuine humor in the little things that can make a couple click.
We now have a trailer for “Fallen Leaves” and, as you’ll be able to see, it’s pure Kaurismäki. Much like Wes Anderson, the Finnish filmmaker will never change his style, it’s his auteur stamp. His films include “The Match Factory Girl,” “The Man Without A Past” and “Le Havre.”
“Fallen Leaves,” currently at 100% on RT, 79 on MC, opens in theaters on November 17 via MUBI. It will also be screening at a bunch of fall festivals next month including Telluride, TIFF, NYFF and London.
