“The Equalizer 3” is eyeing a $42 million weekend opening. This is a record-high opening for the R-rated film franchise. It easily dethroned “Gran Turismo” from the top spot at the box-office.
Meanwhile, Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” is projected to have a $20 million opening in China. Word of mouth is strong for the film, carrying a 9.5 on Maoyan, the aggregate platform’s best-ever audience score for a Nolan film. The Douban critics score is at 8.7.
Variety says “the $900M mark for “Oppenheimer” is within reach and $1 billion is closer than box office watchers ever expected.” Before the ‘Barbeheimer’ phenomenon fully ignited, I would have guessed $500 million, at most, for this R-rated dialogue-driven film.
Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” crossed the $600 million domestic mark this weekend. It added another $10 million to its tally. As it stands, the total worldwide gross for “Barbie” is at a whopping $1.38 billion.
