UPDATED: The embargo has lifted and the reviews have been published. The consensus is that Mann has made a good, but flawed movie. Penélope Cruz keeps being cited as a major standout.
The only flat-out raves come from Variety’s Owen Gleiberman and THR’s David Rooney and, Mann aficionado, Vulture’s Bilge Ebiri.
Also positive are The Telegraph, and Vanity Fair. Mixed reviews come to us from Mashable, IGN, BBC, The Guardian, Deadline, Screen, IndieWire, Time, Paste, The Playlist, Little White Lies, Rolling Stone, and GQ.
Some of the above are semi-positive, but we expected so much more from Mann. Hopefully I’ll be part of the minority that loved it when I catch “Ferrari” at NYFF next month. Don’t be surprised if it gets reappraised in the same way “Blackhat” and “Miami Vice” were.
So far, ”Ferrari” is at 74 on Metacritic, based on 15 reviews, a few negative ones haven’t been added yet, so the score will go down. 72% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 18 reviews.
EARLIER: I’ve spoken to four people who attended the morning screening of Michael Mann’s “Ferrari” at Venice. Word is very mixed on the film. Its Letterboxd rating is also low.
Some are comparing it to “House of Gucci,” with the bad Italian accents. The review embargo isn’t supposed to lift until later today, so I’ll be covering more of this one in the early afternoon.
